Rideau Area Participation Awarded

Patrick received the Rideau Area 2009-2010 Participation award.
Criteria for the award is:
-Participate in at least 2 Area events
-Participate in 90% Group/Section events
-Participate in 90% of Section Meetings.

Hopefully we can issue more of these next year to both our Beavers and Leaders.

A Colony received 2009-2010 Commissioners Quality Award

1st Manotick A Colony has been awarded the Voyageur Council Commissioner's Quality Award (Gold Level) for the 2009-2010 year (2 years in a row).

To be eligible for the Commissioner's Quality Award, a Colony must meet the following criteria (Our effort to meet the requirements for the 2010-2011 year are in blue!):
  • The Colony maintains an average attendance of 80% at its weekly meetings. (So far so good for this year! We are averaging 92% attendance.)

  • The Colony attends at least one Area or Council-wide program activity during the year (eg. Beaveree, hike, camp, sleepover) (Done! - All Sections Activity Day - but many more are planned!)

  • The Colony participates in five field trips during the year, two of which must feature the outdoors. (we had our Campfire at No'Chimik! And more that need to be planned)
  • The Colony includes a spiritual element in at least 75% of its meetings. These activities may include an opening or closing prayer, use of the promise, law and motto, a Scouter's Five, Scouts Own or participation is a special service at their place of worship. (Done at every meeting so far!)
  • The Colony participates in Apple Day or Popcorn or Scoutrees with 75% attendance. (70% participation on Apple Day - 70% particiation in Popcorn ;so we are a little short on any one event so far...)

  • At least one member of the Leadership Team holds current Standard First Aid accreditation. (We have 2 leaders with the accreditation)

  • The Colony maintains written, up-to-date records on attendance membership, dues and finances. (Yes we do!)

  • Colony, as a whole, participates in at least one linking activity with a Cub Pack, and Senior Beavers to participate in at least 3 additional activities with a Cub Pack. (All Section Activity Day counts - but others are planned!)

  • 50 % percent of all registered leaders have received their Wood Badge Part 1 recognition for Colony. (3 of 6 leaders have WB1 and we are hoping to have 100% by December, along with hopefully one leader having Wood Badge 2 'WB2' in 2011)

  • A member of the Colony Leadership Team attends all Group Committee meetings. (So far so good)

  • The Leadership Team has a long-range (one year) program plan. A copy of the plan is presented to The Group Commissioner at the beginning of the scouting year and shall include: one fully-planned meeting, the total number of meetings and themes for the year, an indication of how responsibilities are shared at the planning meetings and methods used to ensure youth input in formulating the plan. (Done!)
Thanks to all on the leadership team for your help and efforts in achieving this level of quality! We are also well on our way to maintaining this level for the 2010-2011 year!

Popcorn Fundraiser - Ends Nov 2nd

Our Popcorn fundraiser has begun and there are a few things to point out

A Colony will supplement the available prizes by

  • providing a Lego toy to the largest seller in A Colony
  • providing a Lego toy to one participant by random draw
Details of the prizes available from Scouts Canada National and Council can be found here ....see Prize Matrix

Popcorn Fundraising ends on 2nd of November where all forms must be returned to 'Malak'

Investiture Night- Campfire at Nochimik

On Oct 12th we will be having our fall camp fire at Camp No'Chimik.   Meet at No'chimik between 6 - 6:15pm.  We will likely be there a little later than usual, ending around 7-45.  C Colony will be joining us, and there will be a snack (rice krispie square) and hot chocolate.

If the weather is not going to cooperate on Tuesday night, we will have the campfire inside at St Jerome School.  Check back to the blog to see where we will be meeting.  If there is a need to change to our inside plan, I will have that info posted no later than 5:00 pm on Tuesday Night.

Here is a map to No'Chimik (5943 Second Line Road, South of Manotick).

From 1st Manotick Beavers Colony A

If the map is a bit small, here are the directions:

From Manotick Main Street - head South
Go through the town of Manotick and turn right onto Century Road.
Go all the way to the end of Century Road
Turn left onto Second Line
Turn Left at No'Chimik (5943) - up the long driveway to the house/barn.
There is a Scouts sign at the end of the driveway.

Go through the swing gate to the parking area.  The parking area may be a bit wet at No'Chimik depending on the weather. If it is, don't go through the gate, and park around the barns and near the house instead. That way noone should get stuck!

After you park, follow the road down to the bottom of the hill.  The campfire pit is to the right in the trees. Because there will be a lot of people it would be especially appreciated by the owners of the camp if we can Carpool. Please do your best to accomodate this.

See you there!

Lodge Night - Oct 5

Lodge night will be centered around splitting the kids into "Lodges", or smaller groups within the colony. Many activities we do (i.e. crafts) are better managed in smaller groups. Your child will be assigned to a lodge, select their lodge badge which will be provided next week at investiture (which is sewn on the pocket of the Beaver vest).

Typically we have an activity where they create a lodge flag and some games to work together with their new lodge buddies.

We will also be working on the Beaver law, motto and promise, which your child needs to know to be invested into the colony. (Don't worry too much, we typically help them out with this. They don't need to have it memorized!).

Apple Day

Our first fundraiser of the year, Apple Day, will be held on October 2nd. This is the first Saturday of Oct. This is one of our major fundraisers, and funds raised from this effort are typically spent on leader training, group equipment and other adminstrative expenses.

Typically, Apple Day consists of the Beavers canvassing the neighbourhood for support for our program. We typically canvass in the morning, and we will be having hot chocolate and cookies afterwards.

End of Year Party

Don't wear your uniform to the party.  If you have a blue beaver t-shirt, you can wear that, but please leave the hat, vest and necker at home.  That way we will not have a lot of left over uniform parts at the end!

May 11 - Water Balloons

We are still planning to use water balloons tonight, although we will be trying to keep the Beavers dry as much as possible (aiming at targets).  However, as we all know, Beavers being Beavers, they will still likely get wet.  You may want to come armed with a towel when you pick up your child.

We will meet in the gym as normal for opening, and then head outside via the back door.  You can pick up your Beavers from the back of the school yard (we will not go back inside if they are wet).

Wednesday, May 5, 2010

May 11 - Water Balloon Night

Tonight we will be having some fun with water balloons.  We will be outside the back of the school (weather permitting!).  If the weather is inclement, we will be inside (and likely not using water balloons!).

Your Beaver will be coming home wet tonight (unless we are inside!)

This will be the last night at the school.

4 May - Campfire - MOVED INSIDE

Although the weather seemed to be cooperating all day, I am now sitting at home writing this while watching the rain and listening to the thunder outside. It may be just a passing shower, but the weather network does have a thunderstorm warning in place for tonight (40% chance).

I don't want to get out to No'Chimik and get half way through the campfire only to have it start to pour.
The area will also be quite muddy and wet from the rain we had yesterday and today.

All this to say, we will go with our back up option and have an indoor campfire at the school.

So, DO NOT GO TO NO'CHIMIK. GO TO ST JEROME'S SCHOOL as usual.
See you there!

The Beaver program is eligible for the Children's Fitness Tax Credit!  Tax receipts were handed out on Feb 9.  If you did not get yours, please ask for it from Chatter (Nick Torrington-Smith) at the next meeting.

Milk Bag Project - Request for help

Lauren Eckert, one of our Scouts, has taken on a project making milk bag sleeping mats for 3rd World children. The washable mats repel bugs, and provide an alternative to sleeping on the damp and bare ground. They are made from the plastic of the outer milk bag, which holds the three smaller clear bags inside. It takes approximately 250 milk bags to create a sleeping mat.

Could you please save your “outer milk bags” and give them to Ringtail (Guy L'Anglias) at our regular meetings.  See http://www.bagsforbeds.com/ for more details.

January 12 - Sledding

This week we will be sledding at Four Seasons Park (next to St Jerome's School).  Same times (6:15 - 7:15).

Beavers MUST wear a helmet and bring your own sled.  Meet at the top of the hill, and make sure you sign in with the leader with the binder so we know who is there.  Parents are welcome to stay, and siblings can attend if a parent is there (we cannot be responsible for siblings).

Hot Chocolate will be served (Beavers and leaders only - we can provide to siblings / parents if there is enough left over - usually there is, but I cannot guarantee this).
